Bring a Bag of Books to a Costa Rican School

Suggestions for your stay in  the Central Valley.

There are many interesting things to see and do in this area. We suggest the following short tours as an example of the different options available.

One day tour – Visit the Poas Volcano and Botos Lagoon. Poas Volcano is the most visited site in the country and has a crater second in size in the northern hemisphere. After the volcano, visit the La Paz Waterfall Park. This park has a tropical rain forest with five different waterfalls. There is a huge butterfly observatory as well as a site with numerous humming birds. There is also an attractive restaurant overlooking the park.

Second day tour – Go to the Coffee Britt Coffee Tour for half a day. This tour is in reality a very entertaining stage show and a tour of their  coffee field with a guide. Afterward, enjoy an aperitif in the restaurant.  In the afternoon visit the InBio Park (The National Institute of Biodiversity )

it is an amazing theme park that offers an interactive experience with Nature. Here you will see groupings of plants and trees from the tropical rainforest, the Central Valley, and species from the dry tropical forest and wetlands. There also native wild  animals in the park.  On the  campus, which covers an area of more than 5 hectares, visitors can observe many bird species and marvel at the colors of the orchids, heliconias and bromeliads. There is also an underground passage with glass for viewing the life in a lagoon with its fish, frogs, and plants.

Third day tour -  Visit the Zoo Ave which is a tropical bird foundation.  The foundation receives wounded birds, cares for them and if possible releases them again in the wild. The zoo has an extensive collection of tropical birds including some in danger of extinction such as the scarlet macaw. There are also animals such as alligators, tortoises, monkeys, tapirs and deer.

In the afternoon visit Grecia a town near to the airport and Alajuela. Grecia has the reputation of being the cleanest town in the country. It has an all metal church which is of historic interest because of its coming to Costa Rica. The church was fabricated in San Francisco and was being shipped to Greece. When it arrived in Costa Rica, it was thought that the destination was Costa Rica because the town of Grecia means Greece. It was thus brought to Grecia and  never made it to Greece. It’s a good thing that the Acropolis wasn’t made in San Francisco and shipped to Athens because it might have ended up in Atenas instead.

Later, go to Sarchi which is 10 minutes away. Sarchi is the artisan capital of the country where local artisans display their wares. Especially interesting are the things made of wood. Furniture made in Sarchi is famous because it is hand crafted and uses no veneer. A popular item that many tourists buy is a rocking chair with leather seat and back. There are also fine cigars and puzzles made for children from wood.

Finish off the day with a delicious meal in the Quetzal room.

Fourth Day tour

River rafting is a popular diversion in the country. There are numerous rivers which offer different levels of difficulty. For beginners there are trips of  level three. For more advance aficionados there are level four and five trips available. These may be arranged for one or two days including meals and transportation. We take you to the pick up point and meet you on your return.

Fifth Day

Another popular option is the Colinas del Poas canopy tour wich is an exciting cable ride in the tops of trees, there are two lakes one for fishing and the other for canoeing at the site along with an  attractive restaurant.
